Waiting for Mourinho to ignite Benfica's spirit

Despite a slim loss at home in the first leg, Benfica faces a tough challenge to come back at Real Madrid's Bernabeu. Only if Jose Mourinho can ignite passion and perform his magic can Benfica achieve something extraordinary once again.

1. When comparing the two sides, Benfica has very slim chances of overturning the deficit against Real Madrid. The racism incident cost the team two key figures: midfielder Gianluca Prestianni and Mourinho himself.

Prestianni received a temporary suspension from UEFA for racist remarks directed at Vinicius Junior during the first leg in Portugal. The 20-year-old midfielder’s role at Benfica has grown significantly under Mourinho. He has scored 2 goals and provided 2 assists across all competitions this season. Prestianni’s style is often compared to his compatriot Angel Di Maria. However, this unfortunate incident could heavily impact Prestianni’s career, with a possible suspension of up to 10 matches.

What about Mourinho? He must watch the second leg at Bernabeu from the stands after receiving his second yellow card in the first leg. The absence of the Portuguese coach’s direct guidance at Bernabeu is a major disadvantage for Benfica. In their 4-2 victory over Real Madrid in the final Champions League qualifying round a month ago, Mourinho made a difference with tactical substitutions late in the game when Benfica had a numerical advantage. 2. However, this does not mean Benfica and Mourinho are going to Bernabeu in despair. The Portuguese coach knows exactly where their strength lies now: fighting spirit. When Mourinho returned to lead Benfica last September, their Champions League qualifying campaign started with four consecutive losses against Qarabag, Chelsea, Newcastle, and Leverkusen. No one expected a team like that to squeeze into the top 24 and extend their journey into two more knockout rounds.

Currently, Benfica does not boast as many stars as the teams Mourinho has managed before. But this can be an advantage since Benfica is not overly reliant on any single player to score and change the game. The 15 goals scored by Mourinho’s squad in the Champions League so far have come from 11 different players, including goalkeeper Trubin. This makes it harder for Real Madrid to identify who to mark closely in tonight’s match.

Of course, making things difficult for Real Madrid again after two consecutive encounters is no easy task. But with Benfica’s honor stained by the racism incident, Mourinho will know how to spark passion in his players before even thinking about embarrassing the club he once managed from 2010 to 2013 again.
