Inter Milan marches forward: Dimarco is a “monster”

Visiting Lecce was the initial game in a stretch where Inter played without their captain Lautaro Martinez spearheading the offense, yet it was no problem since Federico Dimarco was experiencing a career-high peak.

Over the past month, few in the football world have performed better than Dimarco. Inter’s left winger has contributed to goals in six consecutive matches. He scored once and assisted twice in the 6-2 victory over Pisa; scored once in the 2-0 win against Dortmund; provided an assist in the 2-0 win vs. Cremonese; assisted three times in the 5-0 triumph over Sassuolo; assisted once in the 3-2 win against Juventus; and most recently assisted once in the 2-0 win at Lecce. In total, Dimarco has recorded 8 assists and 2 goals in just 6 games, showcasing an outstanding "monster" form.

Dimarco’s excellence and vital role at Inter have been well-known over the past five seasons, but he has never reached such heights before. This clearly owes something to coach Cristian Chivu, who spent most of his career as a fullback and understands exactly what a winger can contribute offensively.

Dimarco is currently the brightest star in the football world

Chivu encouraged Dimarco to deliver more crosses from the left flank, assigning him corner kick duties during Hakan Calhanoglu’s injury absence, unveiling a truly lethal weapon. Five of Dimarco’s eight assists came from corners. The opening goal at Lecce also originated from a similar situation, although Dimarco wasn’t credited with an assist. The ball just brushed past a Lecce defender’s head before Mkhitaryan finished cleanly.

Without Lautaro, Inter struggled to break down Lecce’s tight defense, but ultimately their superior quality was reflected in goals from set pieces. This marked Inter’s 13th win in their last 14 Serie A matches (with the other being a 2-2 draw against Napoli), propelling them straight towards the title. Coach Chivu’s team temporarily held a 10-point lead over Milan before Milan’s late match against Parma earlier today, a huge advantage.

The victory also restored Inter’s confidence ahead of their comeback attempt against Bodo/Glimt in the Champions League playoff second leg, after a shocking 1-3 away loss last week. Dimarco was an unused substitute for the entire 90 minutes, as Chivu seemed to want to protect his brightest star on the frozen artificial turf.
