After multiple rejections in their application to join, they finally became a member of FIFA in 2016; on the day of acceptance, Kosovo’s delegation was moved to tears.

Kosovo remains one of Europe’s poorest regions, and players still receive very little decent pay.

Yet many people join the team for various reasons.

Tonight’s starting goalkeeper Ukaj has two uncles who died in the war, and Novic’s main winger Rashica is a descendant of refugees.

These players have the ability to play in the top five leagues and could represent other countries, but they choose Kosovo.

Although this team lacks tradition and ranks low globally, there is a reason they stand here.

Vokrri fought in the war, suffered injuries, and had ongoing health problems.

Shortly after leading Kosovo into FIFA, he fell seriously ill and passed away in 2018.

On the day he died, Kosovo renamed their best stadium to Fadil Vokrri Stadium and declared that day a national day of mourning.
