Manchester United suffered a 2-4 reversal against AC Milan, gifting Amorim his first win! Bruno Fernandes missed another penalty, and Carrick's biggest problem was exposed.

In their last pre-season game, Manchester United put in a disappointing performance, losing 4-2 to AC Milan, now led by ex-boss Ruben Amorim, in Wroclaw, Poland. The Red Devils took the lead through Harry Maguire and Patrick Dorgu in the first and second halves respectively, but Milan fought back each time. Bruno Fernandes, the skipper, failed to convert a penalty for the second game in a row, and defensive vulnerabilities enabled Milan to net three goals inside the box.

Carrick fielded what could be the starting lineup for next week's Premier League opener at Hull City, with the only potential change being substitute Mbeumo replacing starting number nine Cunha. Bruno Fernandes, Dorgu, and Amad supported behind the striker, new signings Tielemans and André Santos played as defensive midfielders, the backline consisted of Luke Shaw, Ayden Heaven, Maguire, and Mazraoui, with Sena Ramense naturally in goal.

AC Milan manager Amorim had failed to win any of his first three matches in charge, drawing heavy criticism from fans. He also sidelined seven players at the Rossoneri, just as he had done with Rashford and Kobbie Mainoo at Manchester United. In this match, he reunited with these two players.

Amazon is filming Manchester United's season documentary "All or Nothing," which may capture Amorim's meeting with United's football director Jason Wilcox, who appeared in the tunnel before the match. Wilcox was the key figure who fell out with Amorim and subsequently dismissed him.

Manchester United started brightly, taking the lead in just two minutes. Bruno Fernandes delivered a corner from the left, Harry Maguire rose high to head the ball into the net, making it 1-0 to United against Milan.

However, in the latter part of the first half, a defensive lapse occurred. Santos and Maguire collided while attempting to intercept, both falling to the ground. Gonçalo Ramos picked up the ball, drove into the box, and crossed. Samuel Chukwueze tapped in at the far post to level the score at 1-1.

United could have regained the lead before halftime. Tielemans charged into the box and was brought down while shooting, earning a penalty. Unfortunately, Bruno Fernandes stepped up but saw his spot-kick saved by goalkeeper Lorenzo Torriani, missing from 12 yards again after the penalty shootout against Leeds.

After the break, United finally went ahead again. Milan's Filippo Terracciano made a poor cross-field pass, gifting the ball to Dorgu, who went straight through on goal and nutmegged the goalkeeper to make it 2-1.

However, just seven minutes later, United's defense left a man unmarked. Alfajou Cissé made a late run from behind, met a cross from the right, and slotted into an empty net to make it 2-2.

Ten minutes after that, United's left flank was again left completely exposed. Ramos rose to head a cross into the net, completing the comeback for Milan to make it 3-2.

In the 70th minute, Ruben Loftus-Cheek continued to exploit United's left-side issues, driving down the right and ultimately slotting a shot into the near post to seal a 4-2 victory for Milan.

Carrick publicly stated this week that United need to sign one or two players in the final days of the summer window. Left-back is one of the weak spots, as 31-year-old Luke Shaw could not maintain an ideal condition even in a pre-season tournament with three games in a week.

He struggled in the hot weather, with Chukwueze constantly running around him, creating numerous threats. If United use Rashford and Kobbie Mainoo on the left side of midfield and attack, that flank's defense could become a vulnerability. Both England internationals came off the bench in the second half but failed to exact "revenge" on Amorim.

Rashford wore the number 9 jersey in the match, not the previously rumored number 14. United officially stated that it was only a temporary squad number, not permanent, to avoid future complaints from fans who might buy the shirt. The official squad numbers for Red Devils players will be announced next week.

In the final warm-up match, United's Fernandes and Tielemans played the full 90 minutes, while Rashford, Mainoo, and Lisandro Martínez – three World Cup semi-finalists – made their first appearances of pre-season to get some minutes. Apart from Mason Mount, no one in the squad was injured during the friendlies, which is a positive sign for the new season.

However, even though it was only a friendly, the result can have a significant impact on the team. Losing 4-2 to Amorim's side is clearly not a good omen. Three of Milan's four goals were scored from close range, with one possibly offside, but it also highlighted the left-side deficiencies that Carrick must address.

There was a gap between United's midfield and defense, forcing Luke Shaw to cover too much ground and making it difficult for him to get back to his flank in time. Carrick will have to consider how to solve this problem in the final week; buying new players is no longer an option, but the Red Devils indeed need reinforcement on that side.

"We are disappointed with today's performance. We played very badly. There are no excuses," Carrick said after the match, but quickly changed his tone. "I think there were also many positives to take from the game. Overall, the team has grown and become stronger. Apart from today's match, we have performed well in other games. We need to learn from this and work hard to improve. Some players didn't perform well early in the match, and there are various reasons behind that."

Carrick is confident that the team will be ready for next week's Premier League match. The first two opponents, Hull City and Ipswich Town, are both promoted sides, which should help United find their rhythm gradually. "Overall, we are ready for next week. I think many players will improve their form with more playing time. And as I said, we have put in a lot of effort on the training ground. The performances in matches have been quite good, so our morale is still high heading into next week's game."

Manchester United have returned to Manchester and will conduct their final pre-season preparations at Carrington. Carrick explained: "We have a great squad, so we need to make some decisions. We still have a full week of training, more time to build up our strength and get ready for next week's match.
