On August 15, Beijing time, the Spanish top-flight club Atletico Madrid confirmed the signing of Argentine international Cristian Romero, a 28-year-old center-back from Tottenham, on a five-year deal running until 2031.

According to earlier reports from well-known journalist Romano, Romero's transfer fee totals €40 million, which includes add-ons. Furthermore, Tottenham has a 15% sell-on clause.

Born on April 27, 1998, Romero is now 28 years old. The center-back joined Tottenham from Atalanta in the summer of 2022 for a €53.8 million transfer fee. In total, he has made 156 appearances for the club, scoring 13 goals and providing 7 assists.

Romero helped Tottenham win the 2024-25 UEFA Europa League title. In that tournament, he was named the Best Player and the Best Player of the Final, marking Tottenham's first European trophy in 31 years.

He is also a key center-back for the Argentine national team, having played 58 times for his country. In all the competitions he has participated in with Argentina, he has never finished outside the top two (always at least runner-up). In the World Cup held this summer, he won the runner-up with the team.

Currently, on the German website Transfermarkt, Romero's market value remains at €50 million. Atletico's signing him for a fee well below that is indeed a great deal. With Romero's arrival, Atletico's 'Argentine contingent' has grown even larger.
