Vietnam vs Malaysia Semi-Final: Who Will Partner Hoang Duc in Midfield?

Hoang Duc is still the key element in Vietnam's midfield, yet the decision on which player to pair with him is turning into a challenge that requires careful consideration from Kim Sang Sik.

After the group stage, the South Korean tactician has experimented with various formations, each showing distinct strengths and weaknesses.

Quang Hai is one of the most familiar choices alongside Hoang Duc. This duo started in the first two group matches. In the 7-0 victory over Timor Leste, they both shone, contributing to four goals. Their creativity and technical ball handling helped Vietnam's midfield create numerous dangerous attacking opportunities.

However, the 0-0 draw against Singapore exposed the limitations of this setup. When the opponent applied intense pressure and fought fiercely in midfield, Vietnam failed to control the game as desired. Both Hoang Duc and Quang Hai are skilled in ball handling but lack a defensive-minded player to support them from behind. Therefore, Coach Kim Sang Sik may need to consider a more balanced option.

In fact, the most effective approach so far has been using Hoang Duc alongside Thanh Long and Hai Long. This trio started in the match against Indonesia, helping Vietnam secure a 3-0 away victory. Hoang Duc provided two assists, Thanh Long contributed one, and Hai Long scored directly. Beyond the results, this setup created a balance between tackling, ball control, and transition play. It is considered the suitable choice if Vietnam wants to prioritize solidity and wait for counter-attacking opportunities.

Coach Kim Sang Sik has also tried fielding all four—Hoang Duc, Thanh Long, Hai Long, and Quang Hai—in the starting lineup. In the match against Cambodia, Hai Long and Quang Hai were pushed higher, operating as wing forwards. Theoretically, this arrangement gives Vietnam more technical players and increases creativity in the opponent's half. However, the effectiveness was not fully realized, as both Hai Long and Quang Hai only delivered average performances.

Another option is Tai Loc. This player replaced Quang Hai in the match against Cambodia and brought a difference in tackling ability. Compared to Quang Hai, Tai Loc has advantages in physique and stamina, allowing him to better support Hoang Duc in situations requiring ball recovery or one-on-one battles. If he starts alongside Hoang Duc and Thanh Long, Tai Loc could strengthen Vietnam's midfield and reduce the defensive burden on Hoang Duc.

Hoang Hien is also a candidate worth considering. Essentially, he can fulfill a role similar to Quang Hai or Tai Loc, depending on tactical requirements. However, the issue lies in his form and fitness. Hoang Hien has just returned after missing the entire match against Cambodia to recover his energy, so it remains uncertain whether he is in optimal condition.

With many options at his disposal, Coach Kim Sang Sik has numerous ways to build the midfield around Hoang Duc. Quang Hai brings creativity, Thanh Long offers balance, Hai Long suits transition play, while Tai Loc and Hoang Hien provide alternative choices in terms of physicality and operational style.
