Explanation of why the Indian team chose Brazil over the FIFA ASEAN Cup

The Indian team has made the decision to pull out of the 2026 FIFA ASEAN Cup in order to focus on a high-profile friendly against Brazil scheduled for early October in Kolkata. The confirmation came from AIFF Deputy Secretary General M. Satyanarayanan on August 13.

According to The Times of India, the Indian team initially accepted FIFA's invitation to participate in the new tournament designed for Southeast Asian teams and some guest teams from outside the region. The South Asian side was placed in Group A of Division 1 alongside Indonesia, Malaysia, and Singapore.

However, the FIFA ASEAN Cup is scheduled to take place from September 21 to October 6, overlapping with India's planned friendly matches. Most notably, the match against Brazil is expected to be held on October 3 at Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata.

"We have withdrawn from the FIFA ASEAN Cup because it is not possible to both play against Brazil and participate in the FIFA ASEAN Cup," Mr. Satyanarayanan stated.

Before reaching this decision, the AIFF had considered using a different squad, or a development team, to compete in the FIFA ASEAN Cup while the strongest lineup prepared for the Brazil match. However, this plan was later abandoned, and India chose to dedicate the FIFA Days to international friendlies.

This withdrawal represents a significant shift from the AIFF's original plans. Previously, the Indian football federation had accepted FIFA's invitation and signed an agreement to take part in the tournament. The new decision also means India misses the opportunity to face several top Southeast Asian teams in a FIFA-organized competition.

According to The Times of India, India did not qualify for the 2027 Asian Cup and has struggled in recent years to find high-ranked opponents for regular matches. Therefore, the chance to face Brazil, a five-time World Cup champion, was given higher priority by the AIFF than the FIFA ASEAN Cup.
