Messi returns after a loss, and his opponent's gesture touches the entire world

Just four days after the death of his father, Lionel Messi was back on the field. In the middle of the game, a surprising act by a rival player produced a touching scene.

Lionel Messi made his return playing for Inter Miami in the match against Club Leon in the 2026 Leagues Cup, only four days after his father, Jorge Messi, passed away at the age of 68.

The Argentine superstar's appearance therefore carried special emotions. Messi had just returned to Rosario to bid farewell to his father, who had accompanied him throughout almost his entire career, and initially it was thought he might need more time before returning to the pitch.

However, Messi decided to play. He was brought on at the start of the second half and soon became the center of a special moment. During an attack, Messi took the ball and made his trademark dribble to get past Jhohan Romana. The Colombian center-back for Club Leon blocked the move, but instead of immediately returning to position, Romana unexpectedly wrapped his arms around Messi.

The crowd at Nu Stadium gave a warm reaction to this image. After the match, Club Leon also shared the moment on social media and sent a special message to Messi.

"This hug comes from Leon, from everyone, from football, and it's for you, dear Lionel", the Mexican club wrote, along with words of "respect and affection."

That message was even more moving because Messi had just shared his grief over his father's passing.

In a letter posted on Instagram, the Argentina captain admitted he was going through the hardest time and even began to question his playing future.

"I don't know what I'll do without my father. I don't know how to move forward. I only know how to play football, and now I have many doubts about how long I can continue.", Messi wrote.

Jorge Messi played a special role in his son's career. He closely followed Messi from the early days in Rosario, accompanied the family when they moved to Barcelona, and later served as his representative, handling many important behind-the-scenes matters.

Messi once revealed that his father was one of the reasons he was determined to participate in the 2026 World Cup, even though Jorge's health had deteriorated just before the tournament.

The past few days have probably been an especially difficult time for the biggest star in football history. From words of support and encouragement from colleagues, a message from Cristiano Ronaldo, to the sympathy of fans worldwide, Messi has received a great deal of sharing after such a huge loss.
