Will Adou Minh be a quality addition to the defense of the Vietnamese national team?

With a solid performance that helped Hanoi Police beat Adelaide United 2-0, Adou Minh may have impressed coach Kim Sang Sik as he seeks more options for the Vietnamese national team's defense.

Adou Minh has made a name for himself.

In fact, those who have followed Adou Legley Minh over the past two years will not be too surprised by his impressive performances. From Ha Tinh to CAHN (Hanoi Police), the defender born in 1997 has been gradually proving his stability, resilience, and ability to adapt to increasingly demanding environments.

In the 2024/25 season, Adou Minh played 22 out of 26 V.League matches, all of them full 90 minutes. He scored one goal and accumulated 1,980 minutes of play, ranking sixth among defenders with the most playing time in the league. Notably, Adou Minh was also selected for the team of the season.

For a central defender, consistency is often as important as brilliant moments. A player can win a beautiful tackle, but to become a reliable anchor, he must maintain concentration over dozens of matches. Adou Minh has done that at Ha Tinh. In fact, his playing the full 90 minutes in all 22 starts further highlights his importance. Adou is not a backup option. He is a part of the defensive structure that Ha Tinh can trust.

That was also the foundation that helped him attract interest from CAHN and take a new step in his career.

If Ha Tinh helped Adou Minh build his reputation, then CAHN is giving him the chance to prove his ability at a different level. The match against Adelaide United is the clearest example. CAHN had to play away against an Australian representative in a decisive match for a spot in the AFC Champions League Elite group stage. The Vietnamese team faced many disadvantages but still won 2-0 thanks to goals from David Henen and Koko.

In such a match, the defense faced a different kind of pressure compared to many V.League games. The pace, physicality, and movement of Adelaide's players were a real test for CAHN's defenders. Adou Minh responded with solidity and composure.

The notable thing about him is not trying to make flashy plays. Adou plays the way a central defender should: holding position, reading the situation, challenging at the right time, and minimizing dangerous spaces. In Adelaide, his solidity left former Spain U19 international Juan Muniz frustrated and he was substituted midway through the second half.

Adou Minh's solidity and physical foundation (even though he is only 1m78 tall) are particularly important qualities for the Vietnamese national team. He is expected to help make the defensive system more reliable.

Of course, club form does not automatically guarantee a spot on the national team. Adou Minh still has to compete with the defenders who are already in coach Kim Sang Sik's plans. But purely in terms of professionalism, Adou is giving more and more reasons to be watched.

At 29 years old, it is a relatively ideal age for a central defender. He has enough experience to handle complex situations, while still having time to develop further. From Ha Tinh to CAHN, Adou is on the right trajectory: each step forward takes him to a more demanding environment.

Notably, immediately after securing the historic ticket to the AFC Champions League Elite group stage, CAHN officially announced that Adou Minh had completed the legal procedures and obtained Vietnamese citizenship. Thus, he no longer has any legal issues regarding playing for the Vietnamese national team. It should be noted that CAHN will continue to compete in the AFC Champions League Elite, so Adou Minh will have additional tests that not every defender in Vietnam can get.

Clearly, the best way to convince the national team is not through introductions or overseas Vietnamese origins. It lies in on-field performances. Adou Minh is building his profile exactly that way. Đặng Văn Lâm, Cao Pendant Quang Vinh, Patrik Lê Giang,… have shown that this resource can bring new value to Vietnamese football. Adou Minh could very well be the next figure.
