OFFICIAL: India Heavily Fined by FIFA for Withdrawing from Tournament Featuring Vietnam National Team

The All India Football Federation (AIFF) has officially announced its non-participation in the FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026 and will definitely receive a penalty under FIFA rules.

According to the Times of India, The AIFF has informed FIFA that the Indian national team cannot take part in the FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026.This is a notable decision, as India was previously invited to the tournament as one of the guest teams from outside Southeast Asia.

What puts the AIFF in trouble is that withdrawing after having been included in the tournament's organizational plan could lead to disciplinary action. According to Article 5.2 of the FIFA ASEAN Cup regulations as cited by the Times of India, any member association that withdraws from the tournament no later than 30 days before the opening match will face a minimum fine of 15,000 Swiss Francs (CHF) imposed by the FIFA Disciplinary Committee.

Thus, in principle, the AIFF is facing the risk of a fine after deciding to withdraw the Indian team from the tournament. However, the AIFF believes that it may be considered for exemption or reduction of sanctions after sending a detailed explanatory letter to FIFA Secretary General Mattias Grafstrom regarding the reasons behind this decision.

The direct cause stems from the schedule. India was drawn in the same group as hosts Indonesia, Malaysia, and Singapore in the top tier of the FIFA ASEAN Cup. The group winner will play the final on October 3, which coincides with the day the Indian team is scheduled to host Brazil in a highly anticipated friendly match in Kolkata.

Initially, the AIFF had considered using two different squads, sending one team to the FIFA ASEAN Cup while keeping the stronger team for the match against Brazil. However, according to PTI, FIFA regulations do not allow a team to participate in a FIFA-recognized tournament with an U23 or reserve squad. This made India's plan to 'split the forces' unfeasible.

AIFF President Kalyan Chaubey confirmed that India chose the match against Brazil because it is seen as a unique opportunity for the country's football. According to Mr. Chaubey, India has faced Singapore and Malaysia multiple times in recent years and can still meet these opponents in the future, whereas bringing the Brazilian national team to play on Indian soil is a very rare opportunity.

In addition to Brazil, the AIFF plans to organize two more friendlies against higher-ranked opponents during the FIFA Days. The identities of the teams have not been disclosed, but the Times of India reports that at least one of the contacted opponents has previously participated in the 2026 World Cup.

India's withdrawal means that the FIFA ASEAN Cup must make adjustments after losing a guest team in the top tier..For the AIFF, choosing Brazil may bring great value in terms of professionalism, commerce, and image, but the immediate cost could be a penalty from FIFA. The minimum fine of 15,000 CHF is clearly stipulated, and whether India can obtain an exception from FIFA will depend on the decision of the disciplinary body and the AIFF's explanation process.
