Onana delivers bad news for Manchester United in the Champions League

Manchester United is confronted with a tough challenge regarding Andre Onana, whose wages would surge if the team participates in the Champions League, making the strategy to sell the Cameroon goalkeeper in 2026 more intricate.

Manchester United is grappling with a complex issue concerning Andre Onana's future, as the goalkeeper's salary is set to increase significantly if the club secures a spot in next season's European competition.

According to various sources, the Old Trafford side now faces a tough decision in handling Onana's situation. The Cameroonian goalkeeper is currently on loan at Trabzonspor since September, having accepted a wage reduction after the "Red Devils" failed to qualify for European football in the 2025/26 season.

If this happens, Onana's salary will automatically revert to its original level, creating significant financial pressure.

Notably, the loan agreement between the two clubs does not include a permanent purchase clause, meaning Onana will return to Old Trafford this summer. Meanwhile, he still has two years left on his contract since joining from Inter Milan in 2023.

Manchester United's leadership fears that the high salary will make Onana less attractive in the transfer market, especially to European or Turkish clubs. If they cannot find a partner willing to cover his full earnings, the "Red Devils" might have to subsidize part of his wages to facilitate a sale, directly impacting their summer transfer budget.

Nevertheless, Onana has no intention of abandoning his career in England. The 29-year-old goalkeeper hopes to rejoin the squad before the new season and compete for a spot in the team. However, Onana's opportunities are not particularly bright as Manchester United is very satisfied with the form of Senne Lammens – who is expected to remain the first-choice option next season. This makes Onana's chances of reappearing in Old Trafford's goal quite slim.
